Notes

1. Hendler (2001) and Barnes (1997) offer descriptions of the relationship between “sentimentalism” and “sympathy” that reflect my own usage of these terms. As Barnes explains, “sympathy complements the work of sentiment, for each can be defined as a set of registered impulses psychologically connecting an individual to things and people outside of him and her” (23).

2. One notable exception is Foote (2005). But even Foote’s article devotes most of its attention to the intersection of gender issues and upper/middle-class tensions in Little Women, thus failing to address the roles of poverty, race and tomboyism in the novel.

3. Dobson (1997) provides a detailed overview of “literary sentimentalism” that reflects my usage of the term in this essay. Dobson writes that sentimentalism “is premised on an emotional and philosophical ethos that celebrates human connection, both personal and communal, and acknowledges the shared devastation of affectional loss. It is not a discrete literary category, as the term genre might imply, but rather an imaginative orientation characterized by certain themes, stylistic features and figurative conventions” (1997, 266).

4. For a more extensive discussion of this topic, see Proehl (2011).

5. For more discussion of race and sectional reconciliation, see Blight (2001) and Silber (1993).

6. For more discussion see Elbert (1988), Abate (2008), and Saxton (1995).
